Ashland is a town in Hanover County, Virginia, United States. The population was 22,066 at the 2010 census. Ashland is home to Randolph-Macon College and the Center for the Arts. The town of Ashland was established in 1858 by an Act of the Assembly of Virginia. It was named for Hanover County’s leading citizen John Millington Ashland, who donated the land for the railroad station and several streets. The Richmond and Fredericksburg Railroad completed its line through Ashland in 1854, linking it with Richmond to the north and Fredericksburg to the south. Ashland grew rapidly during the last half of the 19th century; by 1870, it had become a prosperous little town of more than 600 citizens. The Ashland Manufacturing Company, established in 1878, became one of the town’s leading businesses; it continued to operate until the early 1970s. Another important industry was the Richmond and Ashland Railroad, which operated from 1881 until 1952. Ashland’s location along the railroad made it a convenient stop for passengers and freight alike. Ashland became an incorporated town in 1858, and in 1866 it was designated as the county seat of Hanover County. The town continued to grow throughout the 19th century and early 20th century. In 1910, Ashland’s population was reported at nearly 800 people. Ashland had become a thriving little town with several churches, schools, stores, hotels, and factories. Ashland’s growth came to a halt in 1952 when the Richmond and Ashland Railroad ceased operations. However, the town continued to grow slowly but steadily throughout the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st century; its population was reported at 22,066 in 2010. Ashland is located in the heart of Hanover County, Virginia, just south of Richmond. It is situated along Interstate 95 and is served by Amtrak and Greyhound buses.
